Paleontologists
A paleontologist is someone who has a very interesting job! paleontologists are scientists that study fossils. They dig up fossils and study them. They figure out how old it is by what layer in the ground it is in.They find so many things! They find plant and animal fossils. They also figure out what animal it came from by matching it up to other fossils they found. When they need to transport a fossil they wrap it in plaster and put it in a truck and drive it to the museum or to a laboratory .They find fossils by digging around in the ground. And excavate them by using special metal tools to remove the dirt and rock around around them. Paleontologists help find out a lot about our earth’s past.
We went to the Natural History Museum to watch paleontologists working on fossils from Carlsbad. We got to meet an expert paleontologist and ask a lot of questions.
They desenterrar fósiles y el estudio them.

Our Process
Before we started excavating our real fossils we needed to practice so we were given tan colored cookies with chocolate chips, white chocolate chips and cranberries and we pretended they were fossils.
Then, our science teacher gave our class a paper to sketch our cookie. After we did that our science teacher gave us toothpicks to dig out our “fossils”. Next we used our toothpicks and we dug around the “fossils” so they won’t break. Finally we got out our paper that we drew our cookie and we counted the amount of fossils we dug out and we drew them next to the cookie drawing and we tallied the amount of “fossils”. |
This is when you get to pick out your Chunky piece of earth to crack open! And try to get a lovely fossil. But, Before you get a fossil to crack open, you need to get a shoe box it can be any size no matter how big, small or long it is. The reason for a shoe box is to contain your beautiful fossil. (not saying it will be glamorous or shiny it’s actually the most dusty thing ever). So you need to contain your fossil before you get a fossil. So you can get a shoe box, this can be small, tall, wide or skinny, Costco, or package type of box. Ms. Lee will accept it (Ms. Lee is our science teacher) no matter what she’ll accept it. Now we can finally pick out a fossil. So you can get a fossil, I recommend a small one because a big one may be too hard to finish but you can get any type if you want. We also have to get toothbrushes and probes! A probe is the weird metal looking thing the dentist uses to scrape off dirt from your teeth. And a toothbrush, well you probably know what that is, but the toothbrush is used for brushing off the dirt from your fossil and the probe is to dig out the rock.
Our next step was to start excavating the fossils we took our metal probes and got to work picking away at our rocks then one or two days after we had started excavating a paleontologist came in from the natural history museum and helped us crack open our rocks using a chisel and a sledge hammer that helped a lot after that we just picked away at our fossils with probes and every one had a fossil!
